City Art Gallery Visit

On 5 December 2002, the Master welcomed over fifty members and their guests to the gathering at the City Art Gallery at 6:00 in the evening and reminded them that they were visiting an architectural award winning building in the heart of the city and during the building of which was discovered a roman amphitheatre.

The Master introduced Vicki, a conservation officer one of a handful working on the many historical artefacts that belong to the Corporation of London. The company were then given an illuminating and interesting talk on the history of the city art gallery from it's origins to today and a guide to the many original pictures which hang in the galleries. The most spectacular of which is the huge painting commissioned by the Corporation of the Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar, 1782, painted by John Singleton Copley.

The members were able to tour the whole of the Gallery and view the interesting pictures and artefacts collection dating from the 16th Century to the present day.

After a stimulating two hours at the Gallery the members retired to the "Old Dr. Butlers Head" where refreshments had been organised. Altogether, everyone enjoyed a very good evening with excellent company and food.
