September 2001 NewsletterMaster’s Christmas MessageThe task force mentioned in my message in the Company's May Newsletter has been set up, comprising the Senior and Junior Wardens and Liverymen Barry Duggan, Derek Ross, and Ian Wilson and Freemen Terry Evens and Richard Freeman. A report on their first meeting, in June, is given later in this Newsletter. Sheriff Nigel Branson has organised a charity "Masked Ball" at The Banqueting House in Whitehall, on Friday, 28th September, in aid of the Lord Mayor's Appeal 2001 for a new Barts Cancer Centre of excellence, which is to be created in the hospital's West Wing. The charge for a table of ten is £2,000 (reduced from a much larger sum, since applications at that price have fallen short of expectations). Time is regrettably short, but the Masters of this Company and of the Insurers, Paviors and Environmental Cleaners have combined together to try to organise one or more tables. Please will any liverymen and freemen who would be interested get in touch with me urgently. Dress for the Ball is to be "white tie". For anyone without tails, Moss Bross at Covent Garden and Eastcheap have agreed to discount both hire and purchases. Masks can be purchased from Angels, 119 Shaftesbury Avenue, WC2H 8AE, telephone 020 7836 5678. The timings for the ball are: The First CharityThe Apprentice Scheme The First Charity has agreed to finance the production of a brochure for the Apprentice Scheme, reported on in the May Newsletter, up to a maximum of £2,000. Further donations will be greatly appreciated. If donations are made using "Gift Aid" forms, the Charity is in the case of UK tax payers able to recover basic rate tax from the Inland Revenue, and donors are entitled to full relief against higher rate tax. Gift Aid forms may be obtained by writing to the Master at 59 Christchurch Road, London, SW14 7AN, or downloading the form from the Company's website. Forthcoming Functions For your diaries WebsiteIn the May Newsletter, it was reported that further work would be needed before the Company's website could go live. This work has been completed, valuable assistance having been provided by expertise within Assistant Harold Crowter's office, to whom thanks are due. Members of the Company may visit the site on www.arbitratorscompany.org. Comments on the site will be welcome. Report on Task ForceAs mentioned in the Master's message, a task force has been created to consider the setting up of standing committees. Its members have suggested that the following Committees be formed: A Recruitment Committee, which could not only identify target members, but follow up requests for details to ascertain why in a number of cases people do not in the end apply for membership. An Events Committee, which could help to organise events and also to identify events which might be of interest to members. An “Event Director” could be appointed for social events outside the Company’s formal calendar, and this would involve more members. A Marketing/PR Committee to publicise the Company’s activities and also as part of this committee, or possibly as a separate committee, a Communications Committee which would deal with the Website and the Newsletter. Possibly a Fund Raising Committee, to help raise charitable funds, although whether this should be part of or separate from the two Trusts would need to be considered. The Working Party believed that each of these committees should be chaired by a Court member, who would report on that committee’s activities to the Court. If a chairman cannot be found from the Court then at least one Court Assistant should serve on each committee. Each Chairman should have a free hand in appointing members of their committee drawn from the whole membership. The Wardens proposed reporting further on the subject at the October Court, at which stage they hoped to have identified suitable chairmen and terms of reference. Some concern was expressed about overlap with the proposed committees, and the Wardens confirmed they would take this into consideration in the terms of reference. GolfAs mentioned in the May Newsletter, the Company would like to form its own golfing society. The Company has been invited to provide one or two teams of four to compete in the Insurers' Company's charity golf day on 23rd May, 2002 at Wildernesse Golf Club, Sevenoaks. The day will be in aid as to half of the Lord Mayor's Appeal 2002, and as to the remainder of SPCK. This should be a spur to any golfing Liveryman or Freeman to become a founder member of the Arbitrators' Company's golfing society. Anyone interested in joining should please write to the Master at 59 Christchurch Road, London SW14 7AN, giving details of his/her club and handicaps. |
