December 2001 NewsletterMaster’s Christmas MessageI was honoured and privileged to be installed as Master of the Company on 30 October 2001, when Michael Wilkey became Senior Warden and Andrew Drysdale Junior Warden. We thought that we should take this opportunity of telling you a little bit about each of us and our respective backgrounds so below you will find some biographical details as well as a photograph so you can work out who's who … ![]() 2001 Installation Dinner I hope very much that as many of you as possible will come to the Annual Banquet at the Mansion House on 31 January; the event will be attended by a number of distinguished guests, including Lord Justice Dyson, Lord Justice May and Mr Justice Forbes as well as Lord Alexander of Weedon QC, who will respond to the toast to the guests. A number of other members of the judiciary and officers of arbitral institutions will also be present at what promises to be a splendid and entertaining occasion. As well as the formal functions already planned for 2002, we are hoping to hold a number of more informal and inexpensive events, including a wine tasting evening in the Spring. If you have any good ideas for similar occasions, please let us know. May I wish you and your families an extremely merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. |

Junior Warden: Andrew Drysdale Andrew was educated at Eton and Cambridge where he won 100 guineas for skating backwards to Ely. Having passed his Bar exams went to Lloyds where, amongst other things, he insured the Pope, the Queen's jewellery and Marilyn Monro's legs and various other parts of Hollywood stars. He says it was enjoyable paying out some of the claims but they were not all total losses. Andrew has arbitrated reinsurance disputes. He broke all records when Mr Justice Hoffman set aside one of his awards within 24 hours. Andrew is married to Merida. They have three daughters, who are all involved with the arts. Andrew puts as his interests stag hunting, salmon fishing, and listening to cathedral choirs. Report on FunctionsOn 5 November the Master planted a cross in the Garden of Remembrance at St. Paul's Cathedral, a moving event attended by the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs as well as by the Masters of all the Livery Companies. In November, the Master and Senior Warden both attended the Annual Lunch of the Faculty of Building at the House of Lords, hosted by Liveryman Ian Wilson, Chairman of London Branch; they also both attended the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' SE Branch Annual Dinner at the Royal Engineers' Headquarters, Chatham, hosted by Liveryman Dr Derek Ross, Chairman of SE Branch. Both were splendid occasions. The Master had tea with the Lord Mayor at the Mansion House at the end of November, when the Lord Mayor addressed the Masters of all the Livery Companies with his plans for the year ahead. She also attended the installation of the Lord Mayor as Chancellor of City University, at the Guildhall, and a reception for the Livery at the Museum of London to celebrate the Museum's 25th anniversary. On 13 December, the Company held its Carol Service jointly with the Constructors Company at St Lawrence Jewry. The Masters and Senior Wardens of both Companies read the lessons; the choir were absolutely superb and a substantial sum was raised at the service for CRASH, the charity for the homeless. A short talk was given by the Director of CRASH at the reception held after the service at the Guildhall Club. All in all, it was an extremely enjoyable evening. 2002 Diary of Events 31 Jan 2002 6 Feb 2002 7 Mar 2002 15 Mar 2002 25 Apr 2002 14 May 2002 24 - 26 May 2002 24 Jun 2002 9 Jul 2002 30 Sep 2002 New Liverymen and FreemenAt the Court Meeting on 30 October, the Master welcomed three Freeman and four Liverymen into the Company.
