On November 27 2018, the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators and Keating Chambers hosted their annual symposium, aimed at newly qualified and aspiring dispute resolvers. The symposium offers guidance to those starting out in their careers on how to get those first few elusive appointments and how to make their presence known in an increasingly competitive market. This year’s symposium brought together leading practitioners such as Professor John Uff QC and Dr Robert Gaitskell QC, who gave informative and amusing presentations on the nature of our profession. Dr Chris McArdle (WCA’s Chair of Education and Pupillage) drew on his wide experience to speak about marketing techniques. There were also two panel discussions with representatives of leading appointing bodies, who gave a valuable insight into how they go about appointing arbitrators, mediators and dispute board members. The formal sessions were followed by an informal drinks reception. This gave a very useful networking opportunity for those new to our profession to meet others who came along to share their extensive experience. WCA thanks Keating Chambers for its support in making this event a great success.
